The Tomb PDF Print E-mail

The tomb was empty—proof that the prophecies about the resurrection were fulfilled. Jesus had claimed on more than one occasion that the grave could not hold him.

The tomb was empty-and Jesus was nowhere to be found. That’s because he had some important appointments to keep that would encourage his disciples and prove to us 2,000 years later that Jesus was alive.

The tomb was empty-and that gives us something to cheer about. It means we can have victory over our sin, and victory over death. And it means we have something incredible to look forward to when we get our own resurrection bodies.

Celebration of Baptism!
Weekend:

We talk about grace a lot around Calvary. We are depending on grace! And Paul said that where sin increases, grace increases (Romans 5:20).

The extended logic of a statement like that causes us to ask, "Shall we keep on sinning so that God can keep on forgiving?" (Romans 6:1). Sounds good! But Paul reminds us that we died to sin when we became followers of Jesus. Then he refers to baptism as a reminder that after that death to sin we live a new life.

This weekend we celebrate that truth. We will celebrate the new life which has come to people who have put their faith in Jesus.

The Cross PDF Print E-mail

There is no more common Christian symbol than the cross. We see the cross at the top of church steeples, hanging around necks, formed by athletes as a type of prayer. Isn’t it odd to see a method of capital punishment displayed everywhere? Ever seen someone put a hangman’s noose on a charm bracelet?

The cross represents the very heart of the story of God’s relationship to mankind. The theme of God’s blog is becoming clear--something about sacrifices; substitute sacrifices. It was not the incarnation, it was not the life of Jesus, it was not his teaching, it was not his example that connects us with God. It is the cross--the most dramatic moment of scandalous grace.

Jesus, being fully man and fully God, could He have sinned? What was he like as a baby? Was His life just a big dramatic act or did he really experience life here on earth? Was he in control or God the Father?

These questions and more I will attempt to unwrap in the mystery of the Incarnation… WARNING: this could be very dangerous to your preconceived notions of spiritual normalcy.

The Invitation PDF Print E-mail

Times had become chaotic and rebellious. The people God related to the most had forgotten about all the things He had done for them. They were continually and perpetually breaking the covenants God had made with them.

So along came the prophets. The story of the Bible is filled with them. These guys were the lightning rods of society. They spoke harsh words. They brought messages to the people from God.

Their primary theme was an invitation—an invitation to return to Yahweh.

How would you treat someone who threatened to turn your world upside down, who challenged you to make a choice?
