In a context of frightening and impressive visual aids—thunder, lightening, a thick cloud, a loud trumpet blast, smoke, fire (and someone was turning up the volume!)—God gave Moses his "top ten."

The story is in Exodus 19-20. Without looking, how many of the ten can you list?

Frankly, just using the term "law" hints of legalism. And we quickly condemn legalism. But what is the purpose of God’s top ten? Today. Are they relevant? Why did God give them to us 3500 years ago?

The story begins without some long treatise explaining God’s existence or origin. He is just there! And His creative energy is driven deep into this world—perfect, proper, good—with life and people! So "Eden" means the ideal paradise!

Within the first week of history there is a crisis—Adam needed community. And within the first two pages of the story there is a catastrophic disaster! It affects all people for all time. A beautiful relationship was broken—in a variety of ways. How quickly things went from good to bad. How quickly the focus moved from life to death.

What if there had been no sin in the Garden? How would that have changed the story of the Bible?

Consider the new philanthropists--Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. We live in a nation that is proud of our philanthropy—our willingness to give. And most of us would like to be classified as “generous.”

But how can one qualify for that adjective? Is it related to the motive? Do I wait for my motives to be right before I can start giving of my resources? Am I really generous, authentically generous?

Those of us who work with churches have often quoted Hebrews 10:25, “Let us not give up meeting together.” Our desire is to motivate people to be physically present for worship—more than a turning of the radio dial or a punching of the remote for the TV.

But meetings for the believers in New Testament days involved much more than times designed specifically for worship—the vertical part of the Christian life. It was in those smaller groups that “poking” each other and supporting each other really happened—the horizontal component.

The Bible makes it clear that as we near the time of Jesus’ return we have increasing responsibilities toward each other. Is it possible to really pull this off?
