No one sets out on a given day to add to the pain of a friend by making, some insensitive comment about his or her dying loved one, or by adding to the suffering by being overly cheerful during a visit. Often the hurting have to expend a great deal of energy by responding in a controlled silence because we hurt them with our words.

The writers of the Bible were aware of this. Proverbs 25:20 could be read like this: As uncaring as it is to take someone’s coat on a cold day, as messy as it becomes when you pour vinegar on baking soda you can expect the same result if you say cheery things to a heavily burdened heart.

God cares and so should we. Let’s continue learning how to be good caregivers to those who are suffering.
