The fantasy of the Christmas festival is over. The stockings are empty. The house is quiet. You can’t even find eggnog! And it is time to pull down the lights.

The problems we put on hold for the holidays are right back in the middle of the road!

We have OD’d on food and gifts. It is quite a hangover! Now we’ll just switch to the drug of football games—for at least a month!

No wonder we turn "blue" during this season. And it is not from the temperature! Is this just a "season" or do I have some choices, some options?

The pressure is on!  Spinning the plates and multitasking is never more essential than at Christmas.  We need to show up for parties and family gatherings at the right time with the right spirit and with the right gifts.  And it takes courage!

But what if we are experiencing loneliness, betrayal, or the loss of someone close?  The whole world was actually in that position when Jesus was born!  And he got this name “Immanuel” which means “God with us.”

So, how much is God really with us?  And in what sense can we survive loneliness by being “God” to another who is more lonely than I?

Are you looking forward to Christmas this year?  As the day nears is the pressure increasing or is your excitement growing?  Maybe it’s a bit of both.  And both might be related to our desire for Christmas to be the best ever, perhaps close to ideal.

Everyone will be home.  There is a bit of snow on the ground.  No one has the flu.  The firewood is cut, tree trimmed (and all the lights working!), food ready, and everything is in order.

Then it happens!  The airbrushed scenes painted in the carols and Christmas specials are ripped to shreds with the reality of life—illness, weather, sharp words, old hurts, whatever.  Is this normal?  How should we respond?

Have you engaged in the “Christmas wars” this season?  I don’t mean the hassle at the check out or customer service desk over the last Wii available.  I mean all this stuff about keeping the holidays “generic”—“Happy Holidays” vs. “Merry Christmas”; “Xmas” vs. “Christmas”; etc.

Let’s take that battle to a different front.  In fact, let’s stop reacting to culture for a moment and impact culture instead.  Let’s help people understand what the “X” really means.  And even more than that, does the “X” mean anything to you??
