Why is it that we want to add requirements to the gospel message? Most of Paul’s letters have to deal with the error of doing that. He comes down hard on any additions, including those who use such additions to undermine grace. In this section he uses major derogatory terms to make his point.
There are times when growing up in a Christian family, society, or nation is a huge barrier to understanding what grace really is. In a sense all the advantages we have actually become disadvantages.
So . . . how did Paul make the grade? How do we make the grade? |

In a day of instantaneous electronic communication (email, voice mail, texting, faxes, IM, the Internet, blah, blah, blah), how important is “face time”? Paul (the Apostle) puts a great deal of weight on personal visits. And he sends two key associates to connect directly. “O, but they didn’t have cell phones in those days! And they weren’t as busy as we are!” I think we’ll affirm there is no such thing as “virtual” community, both then and now.
What will it really take to pull off “face time”?

In our midwestern culture we have few of the challenges of the big city. For example, unemployment is low; we have quality education; personal values are fairly strong. But still, people are empty!
Perhaps that's what you feel like today.
And then someone recently concludes they have found bones of Jesus and His family. Surely that should help you feel better on Easter and heighten your hope! Just what you need---ha!
Well, the tomb of Jesus is truly empty so that our hearts can be full. How about your heart? Is it full, or is your faith empty? It depends. |

This business of following Jesus’ example of servanthood—whose work is it? Turns out it is both our work and God’s work, a team effort.
We should stop bickering so that we can be effective beacons of light within the darkness of a world gone astray. We provide direction, security and warmth to people living with no electricity!
And when all of that happens, it brings deep joy to all of us. It is worth it! |
