During this season most of us will spend time with family members we haven’t seen for a while, and we don’t have a choice.  In that number will be some who are whiners, always in crisis, inspectors, pessimists, jealous, moody -- And we have to try to relate, again!

So, in those few hours of contact—exchanging pleasantries, awkward hugs, eating, superficial conversation, opening presents, getting the latest info—how can we bring energy to the room instead of being a load?  Actually, what does God expect from His followers?

Christmas is a hard time of year for many people. The check book looks empty but the gift list is long.

The pressure is on. Who do you give gifts to? How much do you need to spend? What do you get them? And how do you pick wrapping paper? (The men are thinking "Wrapping paper? What’s wrong with a bag and a bow?")

What is this holiday all about, anyway? Have we missed the point?

Celebration of Baptism PDF Print E-mail

The kick-off for Jesus’ ministry was a baptism.  He traveled at least 15 miles (probably by foot) from Nazareth to the for this event.  It took considerable effort to pull this off.

Why would Jesus need to be baptized?  Certainly there was no need to illustrate forgiveness of sin!  Rather it was an example of commitment and perhaps an illustration of his willingness to be a servant—the Son of God being baptized by John the Baptist, his ordinary (OK, a bit bizarre) cousin.

So, here we are, presenting people who are responding to Jesus’ command to follow his example and advertising their commitment to him!

Have you ever said, “I wish the sermons at church would be deeper”?  I have!  And I also have the privilege of doing something about such comments!

But what does “deeper” really mean?  Could it be, “The pastor did not address my current life situation”?  Or “I really want to know what Genesis 6:4 is all about”?

Is it possible for us to “get deep” on our own?  I would suggest that diving into the Bible by ourselves is something we are not trained for or good at, and beyond that, we don’t practice it very often.  If we want to continue our spiritual renewal, this is essential!
