Popular "theologian" Lily Tomlin once said, "Why is it that when we speak to God, it’s called prayer, but when God speaks to us, it’s called schizophrenia?"

When someone says, "God spoke to me" or "God told me" we often get nervous. How do we know it’s God speaking and not just heartburn?

Jesus said his followers would recognize his voice and follow. He promised to be with us always in the person of the Holy Spirit. How can we "keep in step with the Spirit" and learn to recognize His voice?

Some call them promptings, leadings, nudgings….have you ever had one?

“Prayer and Fasting”...in Bible times the two seemed to go together regularly.  In our day we practice a lot of prayer, but the closest we get to “fasting” is with a plan offered by Atkins, Oprah, or Jenny Craig.

True fasting is an exercise, a discipline, not a diet plan.  It enables us to endure spiritually.  Jesus assumed that his followers practiced fasting (Matthew 6:16).  Sounds rather serious!

So, what is it?  Do I really need to pull this off?  What does it teach me?  How can this sustain a “Downpour” from God?

Psalm 62:1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

Loneliness deep in your soul? Not really connected in relationships?

Anxiety in your life? Not really valued for what you do?

Desire to be truly captured by the love of Christ?

Why is SOLITUDE the answer...

Spiritual Endurance Training: Choosing Joy PDF Print E-mail

How many of us greet hardship or pain with great joy? The easy and most natural thing to do is complain, grumble, act in anger or desperation, or just plain give up.

However, we’ve been called to a different response. In the bible, James tells us to take delight in our trials! He says these trials help us develop perseverance and that it is necessary in order to "be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

So, how can we "choose joy" in these situations? It certainly won’t always be easy and it will definitely take a lot of practice.
