Weekends

During the next few weeks we continue our look at some of the stories told by Jesus, especially those which point out the need to respond in obedience to the call of Christ. Bruce Martin, Ted Landers and Scott Mauck will lead us in figuring out what those stories mean to us. On the weekend of August 18-19, Andy Landers and Ellis Kell will be leading our time together.

Soils and Hearts

Jesus’ story about the various kinds of soil (Matthew 13:1-23) challenges us to have a "soil test" of our own. What is your soil/heart like—hard, thin, crowded, or receptive? What needs to happen for it to "receive the seed and produce fruit"?

Last week we recorded 3 ½ inches of rain. And almost none of it passed through the culvert that drains onto our property. It all went right into the soil where it is most useful!

"Downpour—he will come to us like the rain" is designed to refresh our hearts like a long-awaited late summer rain. But will our hearts soak it in? Just to prepare your heart I would ask you to participate in one of our special prayer times in the chapel on Sunday mornings at 8a and Wednesday noons (we suggest skipping the meal).

This emphasis will continue from August 25 through September 30. In addition to the regular weekend services, we will have unique Sunday evening times of response, worship, and communion (beginning at 6 p, with child care for children up through age 5).

For supplementary study the "Downpour" book (by James MacDonald) is available for purchase at the Information Center. (And check out Hosea 6:1-3.)

Staffing Notes

We are happy to announce that Kyndra Noble will be our new office receptionist as of August 7! Penny Brauns is establishing the new venture of a gift/flower shop. We welcome Kyndra and wish Penny our best. So there will be a new voice on the office end of the phone!

The search for a small groups pastor continues. The team is in the phase of gathering names and contacts. Pray for their efforts!

Thanks

I want to take this special venue to congratulate the landscaping team for keeping our grounds in great shape! Much of this work is done by volunteers, and it all looks fabulous! I am proud to drive onto the property! (And my current personal experience is teaching me how much effort this really takes!)

Dan Schoepf is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Church.
